22 Jul 2022: Debut Piece in Sojourners, Rest Assured CD's out now
How theology, jazz, and rest fit together
Fermata on Julian’s Note is the weekly recap & preview of my artistic activity, with special attention given to Notes of Rest, my contemplative-musical retreat, and The JuJu Exchange, my jazz-electronic fusion band.
Upcoming Appearances:
Hi everyone,
This week’s note is shorter than normal because I want to focus attention on an interview I did for the magazine Sojourners and let you know that CD’s are now available for my album Rest Assured!
In this piece published yesterday, Josiah Daniels, the interviewer and Sojourner’s online opinion editor, wove together some of the various strands of my life as an artist-theologian: my academic training in philosophy and theology, my professional career as a musician, and my love of the church. I am thankful to have had such a careful listener and writer present what is at stake in my work with Notes of Rest, The JuJu Exchange, and my career in general. Here’s a line that sums up much of my thinking about my current endeavors in music and theological reflection: “Jazz is a prophetic genre of music. Even if it doesn’t have words, jazz speaks to the beauty that can come from ashes.” May this prove true in your life.
I hope you get a chance to read the piece in its entirety. If you have thoughts, feel free to comment on Sojourners and/or here on this post.
Due to popular demand, there are now physical CD’s for sale for my debut solo project, Rest Assured. It was a joy to record this project of hymns, Taizé and spirituals, so I’m thankful that you can listen in your car or on your walkman (haha, some of y’all may be too young to know about those).
I'm thankful for what God is doing in my story, and that you’re along for the ride.
abundantly,
Julian
