This will be an ongoing space for the books that I reference that ground my work in Notes of Rest. I welcome suggested additions!
Rest
Rest is Resistance: A Manifesto - Tricia Hersey
A fiery new book about the importance of rest as a form of resistance to capitalism and White supremacy. You might know Hersey as “The Nap Bishop” from The Nap Ministry.
Sabbath as Resistance: Saying No to our Culture of Now - Walter Brueggemann
Helpful explanation of God’s intent for Sabbath that systematically covers many of the biblical texts addressing it. It’s helped me see how the whole arc of Scripture points to rest.
Embracing Rhythms of Work and Rest - Ruth Haley Barton
Great practical theology book about the importance of Sabbath and Sabbatical. Brueggemann is academic research on Sabbath, whereas Barton is explaining how to live it.
Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less - Alex Soojung-Kim Pang
Fascinating exploration of great American thinkers and leaders who had pronounced rest habits of various kinds. The whole premise is just in the title.
Braiding Sweetgrass - Robin Wall Kimmerer
Kimmerer invites us to join her in a beautiful love song chorus to the Earth. The earth give us Notes of Rest as much as we can to each other. But in loving the earth, we help flesh out that rest.
The Coming of God: Christian Eschatology - Jürgen Moltmann
A compelling (albeit dense) academic work on how God is coming back. Moltmann has always helped me see the importance of receiving our vision of the present from God’s gracious interactions with us from the future. Resting consistently is one of the ways we make space to hear that vision.
