“But you, O Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, and the one who lifts up my head…I lie down and sleep; I wake again, for the Lord sustains me.” - Psalm 3:3,5
What’s the relationship between salvation, glory, and rest? Psalm 3 shows us a way. The writer says that the Lord will save the writer and that the Lord is the writer’s glory. That is, The Lord of salvation is also the one worthy of magnificence. Furthermore, the same Lord who saves and is glorious is also responsible for the Psalmist’s rest. So to answer our initial question, salvation, glory, and rest are connected because God’s glorious salvation allows us to pause, no matter the circumstances.
The restlessness that runs amok in and around us leads us to seek our own glory and to seek our own salvation. But we can counteract that through faith. On faith we believe that God saves us and thus is the one worthy of our magnificence. On faith we can believe that The Lord has saved us to help us rest in all situations (like Jesus asleep in the boat). Though you may not be able to always sleep luxuriously, you can have a restful posture throughout this day by holding to God’s hand. This is good news in our crazed world.
May the church be known for being well-rested because we serve a glorious savior.
