Hi everyone,
My record Candid is now out on all streaming platforms! God is good and I give thanks. I am so excited for you to hear these four versions of the same song. This is a common practice in the jazz world, where you release one tune and then a few alternate takes. But Candid EP takes that idea to the next level, where the entirety of the project is focused on my unfolding Candid story, meaning there is no one version of it.
The idea for this album’s layout came from my manager Hannah Crabtree, who has been integral to the scaffolding of Notes of Rest and my original music career over the last few years. She has helped me see that all four versions are equally candid because they are changing as my life does. Her idea to put out all four has helped me re-appreciate the wisdom from the visionary artist Jean-Michel Basquiat: “Art is how we decorate space, music is how we decorate time.” These different versions decorate the last few years of my life.
Over the coming few weeks I’ll use Julian’s Note to take you through the different versions of Candid, what I was thinking about at the time, and what was at stake in that recording. I look forward to sharing from my Candid story, and pray that God uses the sounds and ethos of this record to help you tell yours. For those of you coming tonight to the show in Chicago, I’ll hear you there!
abundantly,
Julian
